It's been some time since my last update. It's now 2017! I've been at Hello Charlie since November and I'm here until March.
I'm a bit gutted to be missing out on a few other freelance jobs that are going on. But at the same time I'm enjoying it here and we have a great little team.
I made a video online to sum up my last year, the video isn't very well done, but let's hope this year holds as much adventure!

Suddenly I have time for a little breather and time to update anyone who reads this with some work I've done recently.
Upon my arrival home from Guadeloupe I spent three weeks at nineteentwenty in Bristol doing lip sync on this dog for a Flash cleaner commercial:
"Either this is top quality doggie lip-syncing, or it’s the best CGI I’ve ever seen."
Praise indeed from tv ad songs:
Following those few weeks I became a commuter! I caught the train to Bath every day to work at A Large Evil Corporation, who are very un-evil and totally ironic in their name.
It was a bit of shock to be told I was to animate a whole internet commercial on my own in under 3 weeks! But I pulled out all the stops and managed it with two days to spare, and here it is!
Beautifully lit and comped by the other guys at Evil
I then returned to Evil to animate another one, which I literally JUST found online! Here it is:
And now I'm under contract at BDH, I can't say what on, but I have a few days off while we wait for feedback as it's rather a complicated job. Something very different for me again, and I'm not sure exactly how I'll be able to post it online!

Since I last wrote a blog post it's gone from freezing to the hottest day of the year!
I've also been working all over Bristol and Bath. After the last post I did a stint at BDH rigging and animating.
Then I was at Coffee and TV where I did some previs and shot design for the BBC's "City in the Sky" which aired recently. I then learned to use Golaem Crown and did a bit of crowd simulation on a forthcoming docu-drama for the History Channel.
AND THEN I was back at BDH for some more rigging, animating, rendering and even a bit of modelling!
I took a few weeks off after that because my old boss from when I was a Jilleroo in Australia and his wife who is my Australian Mum came to stay for a week. I also went to Guadeloupe to visit Kyle who was out there to work on Death in Paradise.
As soon as I got home I was at nineteentwenty for a few weeks animating on a commercial which I'll post on here when it goes out.
And now I'm at A Large Evil Corporation in Bath animating some fun internet ads for Pop Vinyl toys.
I am relishing the freelance life now, 5 years on, I can't imagine having a proper job!

I'm firmly back in Bristol and I reckon there'll be lots of cool things coming up work-wise!
Spent last week at nineteentwenty which I really enjoyed, Beryl was allowed to come and she had 2 Springer Spaniel friends to keep her company.
Currently enjoying a week off, but it's a bit cold to be able to much with Moo, the arena at the stables keeps freezing so we can't jump. That's winter for you!
Next week I'm back in BDH and really looking forward it

Well ILM went on a bit longer that planned! 5 weeks soon turned into 3 months+, I missed the animals and home, but I loved it. It was great to catch up with lots of London friends and colleagues and also to be part of the Star Wars hype, I'm really looking forward to The Force Awakens despite the fact that all I did towards it was walk up and down for someone else's animation reference. I've been working on episode 8 which won't be out until (I think) Summer 2017, so I must keep keeping all the secrets that I know!
I'm now working for Doghouse Post Production in Bristol. It's an exciting project and really nice to be back home, although Bristol traffic seems to have taken a turn for the worse in my absence!
And next it's Christmas, my family are coming down, so we'll have a houseful plus FOUR dogs!

I am available! It's been about a year since I've been on a major job hunt, which has been absolutely great, I've worked with some fab people and made lots of new friends and also learnt my way around bits of Maya that don't involve the graph editor!
As I type I'm helping finish up a job at BDH which I've rigged and animated on. I am now render wrangling and doing a teeny tiny bit of lighting, which is a great string to be adding to my bow and although I haven't been on the project full time, I am proud to have been involved in so many different parts of the pipeline.
If you're reading this you are obviously interested in my work to some extent so please get in touch if you need an animator who can also do other things.
I'm quite enjoying a bit of downtime and it gives me a chance to start back on my short film with the working title "Beryl and the geese".

It's been a funny month! I've been worried that work was drying up and that I might have to seek work elsewhere, but thankfully right now, local work has come back like a fleet of buses!
I've been "to-ing and fro-ing" between BDH and Axis VFX, literally a few days at one and a few days back at the other, which has been great and is really keeping me on my toes!
I can't tell much about anything I've been doing but it's all been an education and an enjoyment. At the same time my rigging and vague generalist skills are gradually being enhanced.
All settled in the new house with an ever increasing list of jobs to be done for Kyle and I.
Moo is jumping very well, we came 3rd at our last one day event! here's a photo of us at Bicton in Devon last month

Since my last update I've been very busy with the lovely people at BDH animating more than I have done in many years! It was roller coaster ride, lots of fun and LOTS of work; we produced CGI sequences for two National Geographic documentaries about dinosaurs:
Dino Death Match http://natgeotv.com/uk/dino-death-match/about
T-Rex Ultimate Survivor http://natgeotv.com/uk/t-rex-ultimate-survivor/about
I think the models, textures, lighting and compositing are great, I just wish I'd had more time to polish the animation.
I've also moved house to Totterdown where we are settling in great. Met lots of the neighbours who are friendly and lovely. Beryl thinks she's the protector of the house although isn't so sure about all the neighbouring cats!
Since the dinosaurs I've done some work at Axis VFX and now I'm back at BDH again. I'm delighted to have been working locally (ish) for about 10 months now, long may it continue!
Finally here is a little clip of Moo and I on our way to winning a hunter trials in the Mendips

I've spent the last 4 weeks working from my little office in Hotwells for these clever people: http://www.redstar3d.com/
I've really enjoyed the process of going from layout to blocking with great reference footage acted out by the director, to splining, to finessing, with clear feedback every step of the way.
Even though I've been using XSI for the first time since 2006, I've had such great technical support from Red Star, that I don't think it's slowed me down at all!
Next week I'm off to BDH -http://www.bdh.net/ for two months animating dinosaurs. I believe the new Jurassic Park film is heralding dinosaurs coming back into fashion just like they were around when I first entered this industry in 2000. 2015 could be all about dinos!
And the really really big news is that I've sold (subject to contract) my flat, and bought (subject to contract) a house in Totterdown! It's a proper Bristol house, painted blue and on a steep hill, with heaps of character and a good size garden for Beryl to explore. Very excited!!

Well, I had a great few months at the Bottleyard working on "12 Guardians - Shudan". I animated a LOT, it was quick and sometime not very finessed, but it was great fun to animate so much in such a short space of time.
It was also a lovely team (male dominated, of course), almost every CGI person in Bristol was there. Great to be a part of it.
Now I'm working from home again, it's been a while so taking a bit of getting used to. Especially as I'm also using XSI which I haven't used since Happy Feet in 2006. However this is what I very first animated in back at Framestore in 2000 doing bouncy balls and dinosaur walk cycles with the help of the Dinotopia animation team, so it's familiar in a good way.
I'm working for the brilliant Red Star 3D who run a very tight ship making slick animated shorts, it's early days but I think I'm going to enjoy it
Also we are hoping to move house this year!
